We are Funeral Directors

Adam and Greenwood Funeral home is our in-house funeral directors. It was started in 2006 with our first office located in Rainsford Lane in Chelmsford. We wanted to offer families the option for a more traditional funeral services than we offer at Herongate Wood with it being a Green woodland Cemetery.

Our New London Road Branch is the hub of our business. We were so grateful to have the opportunity to restore a historical Chelmsford building back to its former glory. We filled it with love and handmade quilted art by original the co-founders wife and mother, Carole Ward, to give families a safe and comfortable enviroment to plan their loved ones funeral.

Hall of Rememberance
Our on-site Hall can comfortably seat 100 people with room for many more to stand. Services can be a religious or non-religious ceremony. The service hall can be personalized by adding flowers, pictures, and electric candles to make the space best reflect your loved one’s life. Unlike the crematoriums there is no time limit for a service held at our Hall, so you can have as much time needed to say an unhurried goodbye. We have the facilities for visual tributes, music and webcasting, meaning that if someone is unable to attend in-person they can watch the service via live-stream or a recording can be saved for viewing at a later date.

Wake venue
The Hall can also be used as a wake venue; we work closely with a local independent catering company and they can cater for small or large groups of people.

Herongate Wood and our in-house Funeral Directors, Adam & Greenwood, are happy to assist families in arranging both burial and cremation services either at Herongate, a place of worship or elsewhere. We believe funerals are personal, so let our professional and caring staff assist you in arranging a service that suits your needs and is in the style that your loved one would have wanted.

We offer exactly the same service and support as traditional funeral directors with the added option of the use of our own Hall of Remembrance, which we offer as a blank canvas to enable families to dress and personalise, as required. As a result, we aim to create a tailored and bespoke funeral service with an unhurried feel in a beautiful and tranquil setting.

Families who choose Herongate Wood are free to arrange the ceremony that is best suited to them and their loved one. With a wealth of experience available from our team of on-site Funeral Directors, we are happy to offer all the help, support and advice that may be required in converting your wishes into reality.

Remember, funerals are personal, you can tailor them to suit your requirements, so take advantage of our expertise and call us today.

Funeral Types

We offer three main types of funeral services at HGW

Burial

A burial at HGW can start with a service held in Herongate Wood’s Hall of Remembrance or when the weather is fine, we can offer families an exclusive outside service on our paved terrace overlooking our lovely pond. Alternatively, the service could be held at a place of worship followed by the loved one being laid to rest in a pre-selected burial plot.

After the service, your loved one is transferred with care and dignity, to their final resting place via a traditional, hand-drawn bier for the final committal. Once the committal has been completed, our cemetery staff will complete the burial plot and then transfer any floral tributes onto the plot as appropriate.

Cremation

If cremation is chosen the service can be held at Herongate in our Hall of Remembrance or when the weather is fine, we can offer families an exclusive outside service on our paved terrace overlooking our lovely pond. Alternatively, the service could be held at a place of worship or at the Crematorium of your choice. If Herongate Wood is chosen, at the end of the service, your loved one is taken in our hearse for a private cremation at the local crematorium. With a choice for the family to attend the cremation or not.

Following the Cremation Service, we will make arrangements to collect the ashes and hold them safely and securely for you.

Ashes

If you wish to arrange for a final resting place for your loved one's ashes, We can then help you make an arrangement for the ashes whether that be, an ashes burial, ashes scattering or finding a urn for long term storage in your home.

Alternatively, where family circumstances dictate, we can arrange a private cremation and then the funeral service is held with the ashes, a short while after the loss of the loved one. At the conclusion of this service, the ashes are normally interred at Herongate Wood or may be returned to the family for interring or scattering elsewhere. We refer to this as a 'back to front' funeral.

We do not need to have been the original Funeral Director who conducted the funeral arrangements to accept ashes at Herongate Wood.
