If you choose Herongate Wood as a final resting place here is our process of placing someone into their final resting place.
- At the time of need our groundsmen map out and mark the needed grave.
- The grave is dug and soil removed for the burial service, and a thick layer of Herongate Wood hay from one of our hay crops is placed at the bottom of the plot to give a soft bed for the coffin to be placed on.
- A burial is started by a having a gentle, unhurried and child- friendly service in our Herongate Wood service hall. The hall is able to be personalised before the service with flowers, pictures and electric candles.
- We can also arrange for the loved one to be placed into the hall before the service to give a few quiet moments for the family and friends to say a private goodbye.
- After the funeral service our pallbearers gently take the coffin and place it onto our hand-drawn bier and walk it down to the graveside for the final resting place. The family and friends can follow them down to witness the committal.
- After the committal, the family may spend some time at the graveside before making their way back. The grave is then completed, and the floral tributes arranged.
- Most graves have a granite grave plaque with a personal message and an option for a simple image. These are to mark the resting place of their loved ones. This remains on the grave forever.
- After a burial the families and friends can return to the plot whenever they choose. They also have the option to gently garden and tend the plot by placing cut flowers, planting spring bulbs or plants from our permitted planting list.
- If an avenue burial plot is the one used, a tree will be planted either on this plot or the next used one in the pair. These will be planted in the trees dormant period which is usually late autumn to early spring.
