With the new worldwide movements to create more ecological habitat for wildlife and insects we are taking this into our management of Herongate Wood Cemetery.
Rewilding aims to restore ecosystems and reverse biodiversity declines by allowing wildlife and natural processes to reclaim areas no longer under human management.
Nature is allowed to take care of itself, allowing plants and animals to shape the landscape and the habitats within.
We currently cut all grass around the grave plots area and the walkways.
We are going to start to allow the older parts of the cemetery to go back to nature and start creating the natural woodland. The trees in the older part of the cemetery are well established and the English bluebells, that are naturally accruing in the neighboring woodland, are spreading amongst these established trees. While we will no longer be cutting the grass around the individual plot we will keep cutting the grass between avenue plots so there is a safe way to walk around the cemetery.
We want to encourage the growth and spread of wildflowers.
The current areas of Re wilding are:
Plots in Rows
- ZA- squares 7 and 8
- Squares 7-9
- Squares 6-10
- C – squares 6-12
- D -squares 6-12
- E- squares 5-12
While we try to find the balance between people and nature and how to thrive together, please have patience and understanding.
If you have a loved one buried in one of these areas we have returned to nature but you would still like to garden and tend this plot then please do.
“The goal is to help nature, for us to live better with nature and take our place as part of nature.” A quote from rewilding Britain.
We look to the future of not only Herongate Wood but to the whole world and how to help it flourish. And give people a place to reconnect with wild nature.
Creating a living memory.
